What is Ayurveda?

By Jenifer Shapiro A look at Ayurveda in Daily Life. I am consistently asked by clients to further explain how imbalances represent themselves in relation to the ayurvedic doshas. This article will attempt to offer an overview of my findings in working with Ayurveda and the dosha imbalances. Note that in my practice, I integrate holistic, mostly energetic, techniques that will not be expanded upon here in order to ensure a clear, concise overview of the doshas. What is Ayurveda? Ayurveda is a system of medicine that originated in India several thousand years ago. The term Ayurveda is of Sanskrit origin made up of ayur, which means life, and veda, which means science of or knowledge. Basically, Ayurveda means “science of life.” While Ayurveda is a system of medicine, it differs from allopathic medicine in various ways, the main being its focus on integrating and balancing the holistic being of the body, mind and spirit. The second main difference, from my perspective, is the inherent belief in Ayurveda that it is the balance of ones energies that brings health. Rather than focusing on fixing it focuses on reestablishing a harmony and balance in the ‘bodymind’. While sometimes in the west we forget, medicine, in every form, is really made up of initial ideas that have been researched to create belief systems. Ayurveda is based on ideas from Hinduism at its core with various other ideas, including some from ancient Persia. These ideas became practices to be handed down through generations and ultimately, they were written down in the first texts on Ayurvedic Medicine, the Caraka Samhita and Susruta Samhita. While new to many in the west, India has held Ayurveda as its main system of healing for generations. Like Ayurvedas influence here, western medicine has begun infiltrating Indias health care systems as well. I believe an integration of the beliefs of Ayurveda with the knowledge of western medicine is a powerful combination. Ayurveda and the Constitutions Ayurveda bases much of its work on what it terms the body’s constitution. At a high level the word constitution refers to an individuals overall health as unique to their body’s own inner ways of healing itself. This includes an individuals tendencies for imbalance and their physical, mental and spiritual resilience to return to balance naturally. Ones constitution is referred to as their prakriti which is the term for the overall characteristics, physical and psychological, that make up the individual and create their unique state of health. Digestion, breath and the way a person moves as well as their thinking processes and ability to change are all a part of prakriti and most practitioners will attest that ones prakriti, or constitution, never changes over the course of ones lifetime. (This reminds me of homeopathic constitutional belief systems though they differ greatly.) To make things easier to understand, there are three main qualities that form ones constitution in Ayurvedic medicine. These are what are termed the doshas and their Sanskrit names are vata, pitta, and kapha. Here are a few core aspects about the doshas which can offer a bit more on what they are and how they are valuable in determining a persons health and how to return to health: Each individual dosha of vata, kapha and pitta is actually constituted of one or two of the five basic elements which are space, air, fire, water, and earth and these energies relate to the balance and imbalance of an individual bodies system. That means that each person has their own unique balance of these doshas. Doshas can be rebalanced through energy therapies, physical activities, the use of herbs and the use of foods as well as through the thoughts which manifest as energies in the body/mind/soul. Imbalances of these doshas cause various forms of health problems mental/ emotional, physical and spiritual. An overview of characteristics of the doshas. KAPHA Kapha, is a balance of the elements of water and earth with earth often being the dominant one. This dosha’s energy is often represented in the following ways with individuals who have a predominantly kapha-type constitution: Relaxed, easygoing personality. Tendency toward slower, gradual movements and speech. Strong health, strong mental stability. Physically often a stockier, solid build – often slow digestion. Can tend toward hoarding things. These are the characteristics of a dominant kapha constitution when the body is in balance. When a kapha constitution is out of balance, you might see: Low energy and weight gain. Stiffness and feeling chilled. A sullen, pale tone to the skin. Especially the face. Excessive sleeping, especially late in the morning. The feeling of ‘blah’, as if nothing brings you comfort. Lack of motivation to start new projects or finish old ones. To shift these qualities, here are a few examples of what those experiencing kapha imbalances can do to shift the imbalance: Choose what are termed kapha-pacifying foods (meaning they pacify the kapha imbalance to allow it to come to balance). These are foods such as warm foods, soups that are lighter no creams), spicy-hot foods and heavier grains like buckwheat and barley. Excess salt aggravates kapha, so limit salt intake. Add ginger and other heat-enhancing spices like turmeric. Sweet can often pacify kapha as long as it is of a certain type. Honey – especially clover honey – is good for kapha imbalance. Honey is really the only sweetener I use with strong kapha imbalance. Even sucanat can aggravate it. A sluggish kapha constitution needs to bring up energy. Do some type of more vigorous exercise a few times a day for 10-20 minutes. Dancing is great as it opens chakra energy too. Walking is good for Kapha’s in balance, but something more vigorous when you are out of balance. In cold weather, kaphas out of balance can get a deep chill that goes to the bone so keep warm in the winter to balance. Hot baths are great, especially with the water element of kapha which can be limited by too much cold as the energy stagnates. Keep your sleep patterns regular – no naps. Daytime sleep can aggravate and maintain a kapha imbalance. *Please note that if I see a kapha imbalance, I also check the meridian lines for liver, pancreas, spleen and gall bladder and offer energy techniques for balancing any meridian imbalances. PITTA Pitta is mostly about fire with a balance of water. Pitta, often represented in the following ways with individuals who have a predominantly pitta-type constitution: Sharp mind that can jump a bit. A sharp tongue :) . Competitive in nature and often passionate about their causes. Strong digestion which can amaze their friends when they can eat a lot at once. Can also be aggravated if they miss a meal or have caffeine without food. Often fair skinned and medium build though with changes in diet, can put on excess weight. Strong speakers and leaders, challenged at following the pack. Can complain a lot about what others aren’t doing. These are the characteristics of a pitta constitution when the body is in balance. When a pitta constitution is out of balance, you might see: Strong urge for sweets and creamy desserts. (I find myself drawn toward pudding when my pitta is out of balance.) Irritable and even angry for some with an inner frustration that feels challenging. Stomach upset, can cause diarrhea and feeling as if ulcers are present (consistent feelings of this type of heat can cause ulcers as well.) Redness of skin and eyes – think overheated with pitta imbalance. To shift these qualities, here are a few examples of what those experiencing pitta imbalances can do to shift the imbalance: Nearly the opposite of kapha imbalance, go toward cool – not too cold – foods such as watermelon, veggies – especially cucumbers, can assist. Eliminate foods that cause heat such as meat, spicy foods, cheeses, alcohol and foods/ dressings with vinegar – especially red vinegars. Note that this is basically a vegetarian diet which is a bit on the bland side of things. Limit external heat as well – take less or cooler showers/baths; no sweating in saunas or jacuzzi’s or sweat lodges :) for a while. External heat can really kick up an imbalance, even causing nausea. Keep exercise more relaxed – yoga; walking rather than running or intense exercise. While many pitta’s like to run, it is not a good idea to run fast in the heat of a summer day if you have a pitta imbalance. Also, deep breathing in through the nose and out through the mouth can assist. VATA Vata, is a balance of the elements of air and ether. Vata, often represented in the following ways with individuals who have a predominantly vata-type constitution: Quite excitable in nature and tendency to do things quickly (sometimes before others are ready). High energy in general. This can come through in their speech, gait, mannerisms, etc.. Can be impulsive and this can manifest in quick purchases (unlike kapha’s which tend to think things through more.) Variable appetite and changeable digestion. They can be very sensitive to some foods, no sensitivity to others. I’ve worked with Vata’s who could eat a lot of meat, but couldn’t do sugar at all. Strong creativity and quick thinkers though racing thoughts and ADD type tendencies can be a challenge. These are the characteristics of a dominant vata constitution when the body is in balance. When a vata constitution is out of balance, you might see: Restlessness in thinking, acting and a tendency to move around physically a lot. Aggravated by caffeine. Troubled sleep to the extreme of staying up all night without much remorse in the morning. (I do this sometimes when my Pitta is out of balance.) Frequent need to urinate (think a lot of movement) and digestive problems which may cause constipation as well as more of a reflex. Appetite is poor and excessive caffeine intake which aggravates the imbalance much of the time. Fearful and estranged. Excessive exercising in an effort to try for a form of natural balance which has the opposite effect. To shift these qualities, here are a few examples of what those experiencing vata imbalances can do to shift the imbalance: Think foods that are warm/ strengthening without too much activity. No caffeine or raw foods which are about energy. Lean toward cooked foods, thoroughly cooked vegetables and soups with a solid base such as heavy grains (barley soup is great). Use of good, warming oils. I often find sesame oil very beneficial as it is a strong, dark, heavy oil. I sometimes do a sesame scrub of my arms, legs and stomach before bed. Also self-massage with almond oil which is such a wonderful oil to take in through the nose and the skin. Focus on consistency in your daily routine of work and sleep. Deep breathing in through the nose and out through the nose or mouth. Yoga is a good one here too as is walking by a quiet stream (or walking on the treadmill and listening to a quiet stream on your headphones). For more information on your personal ayurvedic type, there are many online tests you can take. I tried to offer the more unusual aspects of the doshas as many of the tests focus on physical appearance versus inner emotional states and feelings. Here is a link to a free test at Holistic Hometown (click on Ayurvedic Profile) http://www.holistichometown.com/resources/tools.php. In Conclusion My goal with this article was to offer an overview of Ayurveda for those interested in learning more about what it is and how it’s principles may be used in health assessment and healing. Ayurveda is a complex science which also includes pulse testing, organ testing, tissue testing and more so note that this is an introduction to the amazingly vast resources available in Ayurvedic Medicine. I hope you found this exploration useful, not only in providing information, but also in providing new ways of thinking to open your mind and your heart to your own path of healing. How to Find the Right Weight Loss Plan for You

By Jennifer Murray After making the decision to lose unwanted pounds, the next question is what weight loss program is right for you. With a multitude of health and fitness information at our fingertips and hundreds of weight loss plans to choose from, it’s easy to see why it is so difficult to choose a weight loss program. You know the basics to weight loss are eat healthy and exercise, but if you need structure in your eating plan and help with putting meal plans together, here are some tips for choosing the right weight loss plan for you: 1. If you have narrowed your choice of eating plans down to a few programs of interest, a good way to help determine which is right for you is to get more information – the good and the bad. Start with the website that contains all of the specifics of the plan. Next, perform a search to find out what others are saying about that specific plan. This way, you will gain an understanding of what will be required and also the pros and cons of the program. 2. Ask yourself if the specific weight loss program you’re considering fits into your lifestyle. If you are always on the go and find yourself making quick meals or not cooking at all, you probably do not want a program that requires a lot of time in the kitchen. Also, ask yourself if the program fits into your budget. Yes, you want to lose weight, but you don’t want to break the bank doing so. 3. Consider whether or not the plan you want to try is healthy. Look at the food plan and the allowable caloric intake. You don’t want to be faced with a menu plan that consists of food that doesn’t sound in any way desirable to you. If the caloric intake is too low, you may lose a lot of water and muscle at first, but then your body will go into starvation mode, completely defeating your weight loss efforts. Also, you may start feeling deprived, making it less likely that you will stick with the plan. Once you have decided on one weight loss plan that you feel will fit your needs and desires, the next step is to give it a try. Give the program at least a month to give your mind and body time to adjust. If the program seems like a perfect fit and you’re seeing results, obviously you want to stick with it. If, on the other hand, you’re not getting any results, you’re feeling deprived or you don’t feel like you can stick with the plan any further, start the evaluation process again to pick another plan. Sometimes it takes trying more than one plan before you pick a winner. Jennifer Murray is a Certified Lifestyle & Weight Management Specialist and Shaklee Independent Distributor. Depression MedicineWhat Medication Should You Choose?

By Athlyn Green Depression medicine offers hope to those suffering from depression. If you are grappling with this disorder, rest assured that you are not alone. Help is available and your symptoms can be successfully treated. Depression is a common medical disorder. People of all ages and from all walks of life experience it. It is not a sign of personal weakness and is not a condition that will go away without treatment. Depression medication helps to relieve symptoms. Sadly, depression is often misunderstoodeven by those who suffer from it! Symptoms can be missed or attributed to external events. People may go for years, enduring challenging and troubling feelings and physical maladies that could have been alleviated with appropriate depression medicine. Gaining insight about actual symptoms is an important first step. A self-evaluation may prove helpful. Do you often feel sad or irritable? Have you lost interest in activities that you formerly enjoyed? Do you sometimes feel hopeless? Would you say these feelings have persisted over time? Have these feelings ever interfered with everyday activities or disrupted the normal pattern of life? Have you ever wondered if depression medication might relieve these symptoms? Have you noticed a change in your eating habits? Have you experienced a loss or gain of weight? What about quality and quantity of sleep? Do you feel rested or have your energy levels decreased and you notice you feel tired most of the time? Even more challenging, do you suffer bouts of anxiety? Have you noticed a difference in your concentration levels? Do you find it harder to make decisions? Do you experience feelings of guilt or worthlessness? More alarmingly, do you have recurring thoughts of death or suicide? Depression medicine should definitely be considered if you find these symptoms have become a part of your life. Remember, these feelings are not your fault. Research has shown that nutritional deficiencies play a significant role in imbalances in the brain. When brain functioning is impaired and neurotransmitters malfunction, negativity, anxiety, and depression may result. Depression medication works to treat these imbalances. What treatments are currently available? Fortunately, depression treatment has come a long way. Varied strategies can be used to combat this condition. Treatments will range from conventional depression medicine and talk or behavioral therapy to comprehensive and potent natural remedies. If you are concerned about potential side effects, natural remedies employ a wide range of effective and safe ingredients that act to create natural balance in the brain and nervous system. Ingredients act to get neurotransmitters working again, bringing about an improvement in emotional energy and mood. Nutritional supplements may include ginkgo biloba, shown to promote mental clarity and concentration, and beneficial in treating depression; green tea which helps aid cognitive performance; chamomile, useful for alleviating insomnia and anxiety; and valerian, used for restlessness, for anxiety-induced sleep disorders, and depression. Supplements offer an effective alternative to depression medication. Depression should not be left untreated. Everyday living is seriously affected when a person is enduring and trying to live with this condition. End the struggle. Seek treatment and relief with depression medicine. Whatever treatment approach you choose, either conventional or natural, rest assured that you will soon be on the road to recovery. Depression medication or natural supplements provide help and hope. Wedding Reception Site – Guide to Finding the Perfect Reception Site for Your Wedding

By Cori Locklin Choosing your wedding reception site must be handled with careful thought and deliberation. The reception site is undeniably the most important piece of the wedding planning puzzle. Before meeting with the first facility manager, consider these important factors in determining the venue that is perfect for you. Theme and Style of Event – Beyond the basic banquet hall, an overwhelming array of reception site options exists. From country clubs to mansions to museums, each set the stage for a specific style of event. Before deciding, determine the type of reception you would like to host. I cannot overemphasizetoday’s wedding receptions are about personality and creativity. Your wedding is not your mother’s or your grandmother’s. It’s not your best friend’s wedding either. This is your once in a lifetime eventand a costly one at that. Take advantage of your time in the spotlight to put together an event that really shines. Consider your personal style. Do you want your wedding to be a reflection or a departure from that? Just because you tend to be more city-chic does not mean you can’t throw a country-style foot stomping hoe down of a wedding (it can be done in an equally fabulous mannerI promise!) Put some thought into this, and envision your perfect wedding reception. The theme and style you wish to reflect will help dictate the type of reception site you choose. Remember that options abound beyond hotel ballrooms, banquet halls and country clubs. Also consider mansions and historic sites, museums or parks. The sky is the limit! Geographic Location – Where do you want to get married? In your hometown? In your fiance’s home town? In the town where you currently live? Or even on a Caribbean island? With today’s jet set couples, the possibilities really are endless. Don’t be afraid to consider something different or unexpected. Perhaps the style or theme of your event will dictate the locationa tiki-style hut by the beach, a rustic farmhouse in the country, a posh ballroom overlooking a metropolitan cityscape. You get the idea Size – OKso you have decided to get married in an historic mansion near your hometown. Greatyou’re almost there! But before you get in your car and start touring reception sites, there is one major factor to consider. Capacityone of the most important criteria in finding the perfect wedding venue. No matter how beautiful a place may be, if you anticipate a guest list of 300, cramming them into a facility that seats 150 will quickly turn an elegant affair into a mob of angry guestswe promise. Most reception sites make setting capacity information readily available. If not, give a quick call to the general phone number and find out. Make sure to differentiate the capacities for the type of reception you envision (seated dinner, buffet, cocktail reception etc.) There may also be different capacity based on the setting with or without a dance floor. Do your Research – Find as many reception sites that meet these initial criteria as you can. Use Elegala’s online wedding reception site search to find venues in your area, and narrow down your list. Then schedule appointments to tour each wedding venue and meet with the manager. After thatit’s decision making time! Homeopathy – the Basics

By Nick Stanlow Homoeopathy is also another method of treatment, based on the nature’s Law of Cure-` Like Cures Like’. It was discovered in the year 1796 by a German scientist Dr.Samuel Hahnemann and has been verified experimentally and clinically for 200 years. Homoeopathy is gentle, highly scientific and effective system of medicine as all medicines are prepared from natural substances to precise standards and work by stimulating the body’s own healing power. Benefits of Homeopathy: Homoeopathy offers long lasting to permanent cure; it not only cures the disease but treats the disease from its roots. It heals the patient from within. Homoeopathy is the most rational science with respect to its concepts of health, disease and cure. In homoeopathy it is believed that any disease is a total affection of mind and body, the disturbance of the inner system, the vital energy of the body. Therefore, in homoeopathy different medicines are not given for different afflicted parts of body but only a single constitutional remedy is given which will cover the disturbance of the whole person. The good thing about homeopathy is that it is totally safe and unlike other medicines, it usually does not have any side effects. Homeopathy medicines do not have any chemical action, so they do not have the potential to cause any sustained damage. They have little or no pharmacologically active ingredients. They are effective in both acute and chronic conditions and offers positive results. The doses are given in sub-physiological quantities. So the same dosage can be given to both children and adults. Homeopathic medicines are usually sweet pills and thats why even children make no fuss in taking them. Cost: Homeopathic treatment is comparably quite cheaper than allopathic and ayurvedic drugs. But as homeopathy treatments are not covered by insurance companies, many people do not go for it though it is an effective method of treatment. But you should always think of long-term gains as homeopathy can not only treat the immediate complaints but also take care of your future problems and its always better to take precautions before it gets late. Why wait for the disease to come and hit you when you can al well take medications to prevent it? This way there will be less medical consultations in the future. So the cumulative cost is very low. Classical and Non Classical types: There are two kinds of homeopathy: Classical and Non Classical. Hahnemann’s formulation of homeopathy is often referred to as classical homeopathy. Here they use only one remedy at a time, and base their prescription also on incidental or constitutional symptoms. When a mixture of several remedies is used it is called complex homeopathy. Homeopathy is used both by professionals and as well as those who use based on formulations marketed for specific medical conditions, that is why many people are not familiar with classical homeopathy, and equate these practices with homeopathy. Today, everywhere the use of non-classical approaches exceeds that of classical homeopathy, at least in places where over-the-counter preparations are popular and also where many doctors use natural medicines in a conventional clinical setting. Gardening – Lawn Maintenance Chores Part VI

By Michael Russell In this sixth article in our series on lawn gardening chores we’re going to discuss a little about maintaining your lawn using a low maintenance program. There are several reasons that someone might choose a low maintenance program for their lawn. One reason is expense. Maintaining a lawn so that it looks like a professional job takes a lot of money. Seed is not cheap, neither is soil, fertilizer, chemicals and tools. Maintaining a lawn on high maintenance can cost you hundreds of dollars a year or more. Some people just don’t have the extra money. Another reason someone might choose a low maintenance program for their lawn is time. They may work a very demanding full time job requiring lots of overtime or may even have more than one job. Maintaining a lawn on high or even medium maintenance requires a lot of time and some people just don’t have it. Another reason people might choose a low maintenance program is because they are physically unable to do the work required, such as the elderly, people who have allergies or people who just simply do not have a green thumb and wouldn’t have a clue where to begin. Other reasons could be that their lawn is situated so that it is difficult to care for, such as lawns that are on high hills or have trees all around. For these people low maintenance is hard enough. Then there are those people who are just plain lazy. The last thing they want to do is spend their time on the lawn mowing, raking, seeding, fertilizing, laying down chemicals and weeding. They’d much rather be inside watching a good ball game. So just what is involved in a low maintenance program? Actually, not very much. For starters you’ll probably only cut your lawn once every 3 or 4 weeks unless it rains so much that the grass grows to the point where the town comes and threatens to give you a summons. Some people only mow their lawn every 6 weeks, especially in the summer. And then after the grass is cut the trimmings are left on the lawn in order to regenerate nitrogen. As for fertilizing, you might do this once per each season. Some people only fertilize once a year and others not at all. These type of lawns are allowed to go dormant during the hot summer months. The leaves are allowed to turn brown and the appearance looks quite dried out. Basically, these lawns rely on natural conditions for survival. If the summer is hot and dry then most likely the grass will die as people who choose a low maintenance program never water their lawns. These lawns are usually only green during the cooler months where there is enough rain to keep them green. Many parks adopt a low maintenance program because there just isn’t enough time and money in the town budget to care for these large areas. However, there are some residential people who for whatever reason stated above just let their lawns go the way of the weather. ——————————————————- Michael Russell Your Independent guide to Gardening ——————————————————- Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Michael_Russell http://EzineArticles.com/?Gardening—Lawn-Maintenance-Chores-Part-VI&id=134184 jbm marketing payday loans financial lenders bad credit low income mortgage private student loans with no credit check blank paycheck

Lip Balms

By Josh Riverside During cold and dry weather, we often suffer from dry chapped lips, which is caused by the lack of moisture in lips that could also be the result of the loss of the ability of the skin and lips to absorb moisture. To remedy this problem, lip balm was developed to help people keep their lips moist. However, not all types of lip balm are effective in helping our lips remain moist, as there are some that have been proven to not work at all, which includes some of the most popular lip balm products in the market. One of these includes petroleum-based lip balm, or lip balm that has petroleum jelly as one of its main ingredients. This is because these kinds of lip balm have been proven to only provide a temporary way of moisturizing peoples lips given that they do not enhance the moisture absorption capacity of the lips. There is an alternative to petroleum-based lip balm that has proven effective in keeping lips moist. It is lip balm made out of shea butter. This kind of lip balm is more effective than petroleum-based lip balm because shea butter helps enhance the moisture retention capacity of skin cells on the lips. This is because shea butter has been proven to contain certain ingredients that help cells regain their elasticity, which helps them retain moisture better. On the other hand, petroleum-based lip balm only makes the surface of lips moist, which makes it a poor solution because of the temporary relief it provides. In addition to this, the constant need to apply petroleum-based lip balm on the lips can also cause bacteria to be embedded under the surface of the lips because of how it gets inside the cracks on the lips caused by chapping. To help keep lips moist during dry conditions, using lip balm can be one of the most viable options to take. However, you should be aware that even the most popular types of lip balm, which includes petroleum-based lip balm, have been proven to be ineffective in keeping lips hydrated. Knowing which types of lip balms really work can keep the lips looking nice and feeling healthy. Lips provides detailed information on Lips, Lip Gloss, Lip Piercings, Lip Balms and more. How Often do you Think About What you are Going to Say?

By Karlynn Baker How often do you think about what you are going to say prior to actually saying it? As a counselor, I have been trained to understand that working with Native Americans, there may be a quite a long pause before my client makes a response to something we are discussing. Native American children are taught through folklore, that they need to think carefully about the words they are going to use. The reason for this is that they believe that once statements are made, the words used will circle the globe for ever and ever, influencing the world. Perhaps all cultures should embrace this concept. If you feel you are ready to give a “knee jerk” response”, you need to take some time and reflect on what it is you want to say and how to convey your message without negativity. Count in your head to ten. This can help delay any inappropriate response you were thinking about. You may also decide to leave the room in order to calm down. No change happens overnight, but with practice and a commitment to change it happens. If more of us would take time to reflect on our words, there might be fewer heated arguments and more harmony among all of us. Karlynn Baker is originally from Los Angeles, but moved to Arizona to receive her Master of Science Degree in Rehabilitation Counseling with a specialty in addictions. Karlynn owns The Employee Assistance Program, of Tucson, Inc. Mental health services are offered to companies under contract and the sessions for their employees are confidential and free. “Note to Self” – Creating a Wedding Time Capsule

By Blake Kritzberg One of the wedding trends that’s really revving up brides today is the addition of a time capsule to the wedding prep proceedings. Yes, the wedding time capsule is a growing trend — to the point where you can buy a pre-made kit from many web sites. In kit form, your wedding time capsule takes the form of an attractive tin, in which you place various mementos — photos, videos — as well as predictions for the future; then, you seal it all up with some festive stickers, to help discourage premature peeking. You decide ahead of time how long you’ll wait until you open it again — your 10th anniversary? 25th anniversary? And then you write a stern directive to yourself on the tin to help you keep to the agreement. Although most people equate “time capsule” with “something you bury in the ground,” burying your wedding time capsule isn’t a great idea. Not only does that subject the contents to extreme temperature variations, but with the US Census recently reporting that the average American moves every five years, chances of you leaving behind a buried capsule before the hoped-for anniversary rolls around are high indeed. Instead, keep yours out of the elements and somewhere relatively kind — avoid damp attics, but a climate-controlled closet would be just perfect. Some of us just like to do things our own way, and a wedding time capsule is no exception. Of course you can create your own! And a great way to do that is to get close friends and relatives in on the fun. Have them scribble up some predictions — or perhaps marital advice. Take advantage of a pre-wedding party to snap photos of your intimates, and tuck the photos into the capsule. If you really want to motivate people to get involved, hold some kind of drawing for participants, such as a wedding raffle — give away a box of fine cigars, a bottle of bubbly or even an afternoon at a spa. While you’re letting others in on the action, there are number of ways to go about it. One is to compose a list of predictions for everyone to guess at — the whole experience is similar to filling out a junior high slam book, and just as fun. For example, ask participants to predict: How many children you’ll have, what kind of household robots you’ll have, how many career changes you’ve gone through, what major nation we’re closest to, and which one we’re mad at, what animal is the trendiest pet, … and so on. Another is to ask your wedding party and close friends to compose short letters to you. Give them each envelopes, and instruct them to tell you on the outside when it’s time to open the envelope. Some will simply say “fifth anniversary,” “10th anniversary,” or “when your first child is born.” Others will get more creative — and you’ll probably find it’s terrific fun to stretch out the time capsule concept in this inventive, unpredictable way. Unsafe Things Some Kids Do in Automobiles: Don’t You Be One of Them

By John T Jones, Ph.D. Here are some of the things kids like to do in cars: They Sometimes Dont Wear Seat Belts and Harnesses When they get in the family car, a parent or grandparent or older child says, You kids got your seatbelts on? Jeremy, help Annie get her belt on. Okay, Jason! Were not going one inch until you get that seat belt on. When riding a friends car, or if they are driving and in control, it is a different. They dont necessarily wear seat belts. Some think it is macho not to. American Indian youth in particular dont like the restraint of a seat belt. My oldest son is a neurosurgeon (brain surgeon). He has some very sad stories. Dont you become one of them. Two of my grandchildren and four of their friends were in an accident the other night. They are all hurting today. My grandson had terrific trauma and eye abrasion. (The trauma was caused by a horrible accident he had as a pedestrian in his youth. Everything came back.) Most of the kids had their seat belts on, some may not have. They Sometimes Drive too Fast Fourteen percent of all traffic deaths are teenage drivers. Speed is the major killer. Whats called the need for speed can kill you and strangers you didnt want to meet head-on. Your school may exhibit cars that have been in head-on and rollover accidents, squashed vehicles that turned out to be killers. Dont get into a car with a teenage speed maniac. The need for speed is death indeed. They Distract the Driver or the Driver Doesnt Watch the Rode Teens often think that car time is fun time. Its time to yell, push and shove, and distract. That can become, and too often is, deadly. Behave yourself in a car and encourage others to do the same. Who do you know that got into an accident because of this behavior? Check the In Memoriam section of your high school yearbook. Experts say that immaturity is the factor here. You already knew that, didnt you? They Drive or Ride in an Unsafe Vehicle or Ride in the Back of a Pickup Truck I lost a niece because of mechanical failure of the car she was driving. A sweet, bright university student is gone. Make sure your car is properly maintained, that the tires are at the correct air pressure, that the breaks work, and that the steering is system is safe. Have a mechanic take a look at your vehicle. It wont take that much of your time. It may save your life. Teenagers have a tendency to drive smaller vehicles that are not as safe as larger vehicles. There is not much you can do about that but if you are buying a vehicle, think about it. Dont become a flying projectile bounced out of the back of a pickup during a collision. They Sometimes Drive too Soon in Heavy Traffic Just because you past the driving test, dont mean that you are an expert driver. If you learned to drive in a rural community and then you drive into the traffic of a larger city before youve had experience in driving in heavy traffic, you can get in to an accident before you can say, Jack Sprat could eat no fat. Have an adult spend some time with you driving under more difficult driving conditions. Yes, I know you can drive like Mario Andretti. Please do what I suggest. My grandson has had two accidents since he got is driving license. He was not ready to drive. At http://www.drivehomesafe.com/teen_driving_fatality_information_start_page.htm we learn that teenage drivers are in more single automobile accidents than older drivers. Does that prove my point? In Summary Drive carefully, dont distract the driver if are not driving, have your car checked for safety, let up on that gas pedal, slow down for that turn, dont drive too close to the vehicle in front of you, obey the traffic laws, and live longer. Have you got that seat belt on? Oh! One other thing! My neurosurgeon son says that if you are on a motorcycle or bicycle, wear your helmet. The End John T.
